The Indian Council of Medical Sciences (ICMS) was established in September, 1957 as an autonomous body to advise the government on all medical and allied matters. The council is located in New Delhi and has 31 members. The functions of the council include giving advice on all medical and allied matters, promoting coordination between the different medical institutions in the country, providing a forum for consultation between the representatives of the medical profession, government, academia and industry and acting as a nodal agency for the development of medical education in the country.

The council is headed by a president and has a secretary, a treasurer and a vice-president. The president is elected by the members of the council from among themselves. The secretary is appointed by the government. The treasurer is also elected by the members of the council. The vice-president is nominated by the president.

The council has a general body, which meets at least once a year. The general body elects a executive committee from among its members. The executive committee is headed by the president and has a vice-president, a secretary and a treasurer.
